From knowledge vessels to learning landscapesLearning is changing. The classic classroom, where prefabricated learning materials are frontally conveyed, is beginning to dissolve. Project-based learning and individualized learning situations are gaining popularity. It's no longer about transferring as much factual knowledge as possible, but about a social and cultural interaction with the world. The classroom becomes a studio, a room for invention, experimentation, imagination and reflection. Here, ideas can be developed, hypotheses are tested and processes are designed. There are striking overlaps between artistic practices and new learning methods. An interesting question is how synergies between them can be produced and how artistic knowhow can be included as an aesthetic strategy in the interior and exterior design of this new way of learning. Together with students from grades 7-9 at the Evangelical School Berlin, we explored how a learning environment might look, that at the same time represents a habitat with which they can identify. Based on the needs, experiences and wishes of the children, we developed a design process that was implemented using artistic means. The aim was to develop a vision that is reflected in a tangible space, which is also available to fellow students and teachers after project completion.
