Music for Unstageable Theatre

8/10/2016

Music piece, chamber performance, audio installation

Bild
The artists behind the German-Egyptian project "Music for Unperformable Theatre" are developing a format somewhere between an intimate chamber performance and a concert. The starting point of this collaboration is the virtual exchange between the musician Alexander Paulick in Berlin and the theater director Adel Abdel Wahab in Alexandria, who had previously never met face to face.

Building on personal self-interrogation and discussions with Egyptian theater makers, they explore the notion of self-censorship, particularly in times of political unrest: What happens to vulnerable ideas? How are they distorted, encoded and transformed? Working with sound, silence, music, voice, text, image projection and a single actor on stage, the artists create a performance of the soundtrack for a theater piece that remains unwritten.

Funded by the Change of Scene Program of Robert-Bosch-Foundation in cooperation with the International Theatre Institut.
