Capacity buliding for participatory governance in R&I Dealing with grand challenges such as the fight against hunger and poverty, climate change and resource scarcity is decisively influenced by the kinds of technologies we use. The degree of adaption is dependent on how efficient they are, and how quickly they can become established. Societal change also requires social innovations in order to establish new lifestyles and consumption patterns. Science plays several essential roles in this process. Firstly, it contributes to the understanding of the planet's limits. On the other hand, research and innovation create paths for the future. These paths and path dependencies shape the decisions leading toward sustainable or unsustainable societal developments. Working toward sustainability in the present and future is the focus of social as well as conservationist and environmental groups. Therefore, the commitment to more sustainability in research policy is increasingly becoming the focus of activities for members of civil society. The collective platform Forschungswende supports this commitment. (Dr. Steffi Ober) nextlearning supports the "Forschungswende" project through the design of communications processes, problem analysis, solution research and assessment in collaboration with actors from civil society, politics and economy.
